For those who do not know, Baylor University is the larges Baptist university in the world and the most significant christian university in the Texas, if not the South and the US. It ranked in the Top 100 universities in US News and is a top pick in Princeton Review. In terms of places Christians want to send their children to learn Christian values, it regularly ranks in the top 10.
These Christian values are illustrated in sometimes surprising ways. For instance, about a year ago Baylor President Kenneth Starr took time out of running Baylor to help a man convicted of molesting underage girls and sex trafficking avoid a long prison sentence. It appears that Baylor decided that Christian values and sex trafficking were consistent. Starr who was reportedly instrumental in gaining only 18 month sentence for the person who molested many girls was a good representative of the one of the preeminent Christian schools.
Fast forward to today. Baylor’s athletic program has been embroiled in rape cases over the past few years. These are not cases of he-said-she-said, these are case that resulted in convictions of student athletes. It should be surprising that Baylor administration chose football over justice in rape cases, given that it is a preeminent Christian institution
On the other hand Baylor is a a university that continued to allow it’s administration to be lead by a president is a known supporter of human tracking. On that basis it is not surprising that he would also allowed rapists to continue to run rampant on their campus. Even now, Ken Starr has not been fired but demoted to chancellor. This preeminent Christian University clearly represents the best of Evangelical values.
