This was the headline at the HuffPost this morning. I did not get a screenshot then, but I did find it archived and attributed at AOL. Who new they still existed.
Racism is not a joke.
I do understand the headline. In the 1970s and 1980s white people made racist jokes all time. It was what they did. So it makes sense that Reagan and Nixon talking on the phone would joke about the monkeys who think they are world leaders. It is like the joke of raping Hillary so she knows her place.
It is not funny.
But so many white people think it is, which is why Trump is president. Which is why so many around here said that we just get a sense of humor when we got mad that Biden denigrated a women of color on national TV.
We are not joking anymore, and it is not up to us to get a sense of humor. It is up to the racist white folks and the misogynistic men to learn we are all equal.
I get it. Life was different in the past. When Sarah Jane Smith was introduced on Dr Who in the 1970s she was the plucky girl reporter. It was a statement of endearment and of how the men were kind enough to give a girl a break in support of women’s lib. It was deemed positive, progressive, and pretty.
When Sarah Jane came back 20 years later, she was not plucky, and the show went to some length to ask forgiveness. It understood that just because something was acceptable does not make it right .
Biden screwed up again by failing to check his privilege and failing to understand that just because once was ok does not make it right . The slavers were wrong for torturing and murdering and kidnapping humans. Harris was wrong for promulgating the notion that state sponsored muders, like the reporter the Saudis legally, in their minds, executed, are legitimate. And denigrating humans, even as a joke, is wrong.
just because everyone does it, and everyone thinks it is funny, does not make it right.
