I am putting most of these below the fold because I know many people don’t want to know anything about a movie before hand. So know various levels of spoilers lurk there.
Suffice it to say that Hidden Figures creates images of the US that we all need to see. It pointedly illustrates how purposefully hurtful segregation was. It pointedly illustrates how segregation specifically aimed to limit the educational and professional opportunities of non-white people. It might help create a world where Jim Parsons is not the ‘natural’ choice and actor playing a scientist, but perhaps we might have Tracee Ellis Ross or even Aldis Hodge playing the PhD physicist.
Young people who believe the 1960’s is something to which we we need toaspire must see the movie. The civil rights act might have been in 1964, but Title IX was not until 1972.
It would be wonderful if everyone went to see this movie so it would be the top movie in the country, which is it in some respects. From the numbers I have seen Hidden Figures is top for the weekend, but still barely made more then Rogue One,which has been out for weeks.
